Benefits of music activities
Why perform music? While it is fun to perform, there are many benefits that people tend to not realize. Research has shown that music has a direct relationship with academics and mental knowledge. Students who are involved in musical activities are found to have longer memory, improvement in reading and mathematics, and better cognitive control. While correlation does not imply causation, many students follow that trend, which is hinting that music does benefit student.
I've stated a couple of benefits in my "Review of Literature" section. One I would like to highlight is Mozart effect. It is said that those who listened to Mozart demonstrates an improvement in performance in spatial tasks. While I haven't listened to Mozart, I listened to many other great classical works which helped me get through studying and memorizing information for finals. As for Jane Aw Yang Huey of Mara University, she said that music affects us so powerfully. Throughout my life, listening and performing music, I felt that music helped me focus, study, communicate, and gain confidence. Countless studies have been done thats shows those effects of music on people. On top of that, when I meet other musicians, they seem more sophisticated and lively. I feel that there should be mandatory performing arts classes starting in public or intermediate school, since it does help students grow physically, socially, and mentally.
