Kiran Sundar
Emory University, Second Year
I met Kiran during one of my first few weeks here during wind ensemble. After our first wind ensemble rehearsal, I realized that Kiran was an extremely talented musician and I want to get to know him better. Everything about is playing just shone through and I knew that if I got to know him better, my performance level would improve as well. Since he was an upperclassman, I figured he could give me tips on the saxophone as well as Emory in general.
So my first question was very broad. I wanted to know the origin of his musicianship. Coming from an Indian background, he started with Indian classical singing at 5 years old. He later picked up a South Indian percussion instrument, which jump-started him into the world of music in general. He then picked up the piano when he was eight, played that for a few years. He then picked up saxophone right before fifth grade and "haven't looked back since."
I was quite impressed. He's been playing with so much experience under his belt; it was no wonder that he was an amazing musician. Seeing how much experience he had, I then asked if he thought he would still be involved with music when applying for college.
Kiran knew that he definitely going to continue music. After making it so far, he didn't think it made any sense to give it up. However while his original intent was to major in business and minor in music, the way things were going with lessons and music classes made Kiran go for both a business and music degree.
Other than being involved in Emory's wind ensemble, Kiran is also involved in the jazz band and the saxophone ensemble. Kiran also said there are other options available, such as the world ensembles, but he thought three ensembles was more than enough time commitments. "There just isn't enough time in the day"
Now that I learn about his music career in Emory, I moved to his personal thoughts of music. I wanted to know why he thought people joined a musical-related activity when joining in college. First is the social impact. Kiran made a lot of friends; some are even his closest friends today. Second is for the sake of continuing music. He's performed for more than 9 years, so he thought he might as well continue. He can "never imagine stopping". Third is growing as a musician. He knew he was at a certain level, but he wanted to continue since it's definitely something he don't want to lose touch with it. Also, simply enjoying at the musical setting and having the arts in his life is enough to join a musical activity."
He made some fantastic points. I could definitely relate to all the points he made.
Lastly I wanted to know his future plans outside college pertaining to music. He doesn't music industry, but he knows he'll be doing something. "I'll definitely be involved."
It's been an hour interviewing someone with a high caliber musicianship like Kiran. I wish you the best in the future Kiran!
